Despite the Guardians season, Tanner Bibee’s future is bright

There is no telling what the Guardians will do this off-season, but one thing to look forward to in 2024 is Bibee.

After exceeding expectations in 2022 with the youngest roster in baseball, the Cleveland Guardians have yet to find consistent success in 2023. They currently sit in second place in the AL Central with a record of 62-69, 6.0 games behind the Minnesota Twins. With only 32 games left in the season, the team’s primary focus should be giving young prospects opportunities to get quality at-bats in the lineup and allow them the chance to showcase their talent.

This off-season will be intriguing as the front office has big decisions to make with the possibility of an extensive trade looming. The log jam of prospects, specifically middle-infield, gives team President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti and Executive General Manager Mike Chernoff a lot of wiggle room. Fans have wondered when a big trade will happen for the past three off-seasons. The Guardians have missed out on some of the league’s best position players the past few years, including catcher Sean Murphy and first baseman Matt Olson. They both now happen to play for World Series favorite Atlanta Braves, which leaves a bitter taste considering Cleveland’s potential.

There is no telling what the Guardians front office will do this off-season, but one thing that fans can look forward to in 2024 is starting pitcher Tanner Bibee. In the 2021 MLB Draft, the Guardians selected right-handed pitcher Tanner Bibee out of Cal State Fulton. The 24-year-old only pitched in 28 career games in the minor leagues before receiving a call-up to the Major Leagues in late April. In those 28 games, he finished with a stat line of 148.0 innings pitched, a 10-2 record, an earned run average of 2.13, 0.97 walks plus hits per inning pitched and 186 strikeouts.

Tanner Bibee has been nothing but sensational in his rookie season. According to Baseball Savant, Bibee ranks in the 72nd percentile or higher in the following categories: xERA/xwOBA (72nd), Fastball Velocity (75th), Barrell% (78th), and Curve Spin (81st). He has put up a stat line of 10-3 W-L, 119.2 IP, 3.01 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 117 SO, and 2.3 WAR. This emerging talent possesses exceptional metrics in solid areas, indicating a promising future. The right-hander has impressive numbers in all aspects.

The pitch percentages for Bibee are very comparable to many pitchers around the league. Of the 1,975 pitches he has thrown, 47.3% were fastballs, 28.1% sliders, 15.9% changeups, and 8.7% curveballs. In all pitch counts, whether 0-2 or 3-0, he throws his 4-seam fastball at a higher percentage than any other pitch. With an impressive run value of 11, his 4-seam fastball ranks 8th in Major League Baseball (Baseball Savant). It is his most effective pitch and quite a remarkable stat.

As the 2023 season winds down for the Guardians, there will be many takeaways from the season, both good and bad. Cleveland’s greatest strength under Terry Francona has always been a robust and stable bullpen. With Bibee, it shows a promising future ahead for the team, along with two other rookie pitchers, Gavin Williams and Logan Allen. It’ll take time for them to grow but, as always, the Guardians’ future looks incredibly bright.
